Alisha is a valued member of our team and this is her media journey.
I have had an interest in media ever since high school where I decided to take GCSE media studies; this is where I first learnt the basics of media terminology and how to deconstruct a film. However, at this point, I had not been introduced to a camera.
I decided to take media at A level, however again, I never actually got to use a camera it was more looking at media texts and making cinema posters and terminology. So in September 2014 I started a 2-year course in Creative Media Production at Kirklees College. Straight away I knew this was the course for me because it was very hands-on. We learnt how to use the camera equipment and editing software for both radio and video all within the first month of the course .
I started working for KLTV back in April 2015. The first project I did was an advert surrounding mental health and where you can get help for it. I really enjoyed doing that. I shadowed other members of staff when they went out filming interviews and vox pops. I believe the first thing I ever did was hold a boom pole! I got a lot of experience of what it is like working in a professional media environment, how to approach people for interviews and what was expected of them and me.
Eventually, I was able to work here part time as a paid member of staff thanks to some funding from the University of Huddersfield, doing projects with Milton surrounding Black History and making it recognised throughout the community. So far I have completed 6 different projects, which I have researched and edited myself. They will be put up on KLTV’s website soon.
I have now completed my college course and came out with Distinction, Distinction, Merit grades, which means I can go onto study Television and Radio at Salford University, which I am so excited about.
I will, unfortunately, be leaving KLTV at the end of August. But it has been such a learning curve for me, along with studying a very practical course. I feel really set to go out into the big wide world and grab every opportunity I can. I will always give thanks to KLTV for being that foot in the door to the media industry.
