New issue honours trailblazers, resilience, and legacy under the theme “AKEBA – Pioneers”

This latest edition of our digital multimedia magazine shines a spotlight on historic and contemporary stories of Black excellence across Britain and the African diaspora.

A Celebration of Pioneers

This year’s theme, “AKEBA – Pioneers”, captures the spirit of those who have walked new paths and created opportunities where none existed.

From stories of Windrush resilience to tributes to trailblazers shaping medicine, politics, and culture, the issue reflects on the past while inspiring future generations.

Among the standout features are:

• “The Division of Africa” explores the legacy of the Berlin Conference and the resilience of African nations in reclaiming their destiny.

• A moving tribute to Nehemiah “Lion” McDonald, the Huddersfield community icon whose Lion’s Kitchen became a haven of fellowship and love.

• An exclusive feature with Deputy Mayor Alison Lowe OBE, reflecting on her father’s Windrush journey from St Kitts and the values that shaped her public life.

• “Henrietta Lacks: The Immortal Legacy Behind Every Breakthrough”, honouring the woman whose cells transformed modern medicine.

• “Breaking Boundaries” celebrates the rise of African women like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who are redefining leadership and progress across the world.

Amplifying Voices and Stories

The magazine also includes Windrush: Wise Words — heartfelt interviews from Huddersfield’s African Caribbean elders — and Soundfest: A History of Soundsystem Culture in Huddersfield, a feature tracing the roots of reggae and community through the decades.

Through these stories, As One Magazine captures the unbreakable connection between history, heritage, and identity, linking generations through shared strength and pride.
