In a heartfelt tribute to a true wartime heroine, the Royal Mint has unveiled a special edition £5 coin commemorating the extraordinary life and adventures of pioneering nurse Mary Seacole. This remarkable coin forms part of a collection that pays homage to iconic British women and their invaluable contributions throughout the centuries.

The prestigious event occurred in London, where Trevor Sterling, Chair of the Mary Seacole Trust, presented the exquisite coin to Jamaican High Commissioner Alexander Williams during a special gathering. Sterling emphasised that the coin is not just a symbol of Mary herself but also a testament to the enduring contributions that diverse communities have made to British society. It is a lasting legacy for Mary Seacole, extending far beyond her historic statue.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, this Victorian heroine arrived in England just before the eruption of the Crimean War, and her remarkable story unfolded from there. The British army recognised her exceptional nursing skills and called upon her to oversee medical services at their headquarters in Up-Park Camp, Kingston. On and off the battlefield, Mary Seacole provided unwavering care and comfort to soldiers in their most desperate hours.

Her indomitable spirit and selfless service during the Crimean War are widely documented and celebrated, earning her the affectionate nickname “Mother Seacole.” But Mary’s dedication to nursing didn’t stop there. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she fearlessly tended to patients during the devastating Jamaican cholera outbreak in 1850, further cementing her status as a true guardian angel in times of crisis.

The Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal, established in 2003 by Lord Soley, has worked tirelessly to uphold Mary’s remarkable legacy. On a momentous occasion, the charity was renamed the Mary Seacole Trust just a few months after unveiling her statue on St Thomas’ Hospital grounds in October 2016. Mary Seacole’s impact and influence continue inspiring and uplifting, even long after passing in London in 1881. She rests in eternal peace at St Mary’s Cemetery, Kensal Green.
