A full planning application has been submitted to progress the regeneration of Huddersfield Market and its surrounding site – one of the flagship projects within the Huddersfield Blueprint.
The £multi-million scheme has been shaped by residents and traders, most recently through public consultation in winter 2024.
Feedback gathered during this process has been used to refine the designs in collaboration with Greig & Stephenson Architects, ensuring the plans meet the needs of the community.
The project aims to revitalise the Grade II listed market, built in 1887, breathing new life into the historic building while respecting its heritage.
Once complete, the market will open more frequently and for longer hours, transforming it into a modern destination for shoppers, food lovers, and visitors.

Cllr Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Finance, said: “Our markets aim to be family-friendly, safe spaces that offer unique and personal shopping experiences.
“We want them to be a place full of opportunities to test ideas, eat, learn, be entertained, and most importantly create a space that facilitates economic growth and supports traders.
“Collaborating with the architects, we have developed plans to restore and improve the market to future-proof it for generations to come.
“Huddersfield has and always will be a market town, and these improvements will allow the market to remain a key place for residents and a hub where local businesses can thrive.”
Market Hall Features
The redesigned market hall will offer:
-
Fixed stalls for traditional traders including greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers, delis, and cheese counters.
-
Over 70 demountable stalls to allow flexible layouts and host a diverse calendar of events such as food festivals and community celebrations.
-
Hot food vendors, a bar, and a seating area to encourage visitors to stay longer and enjoy the atmosphere.
As part of the restoration, the market will undergo essential repairs and refurbishment, including the reinstatement of its original colour scheme of reds, pinks, and creams.
Accessibility is also central to the plans, with level thresholds, assisted door openers, accessible toilets – including a Changing Places facility – and more flat indoor spaces to improve movement around the building.

Market Yard and Outdoor Space
The regeneration will extend outdoors with the creation of a new Market Yard. This flexible space will provide capacity for around 50 demountable stalls, with additional room available during peak periods.
The area is expected to become a lively hub for outdoor trading and events.
A Key Part of the Huddersfield Blueprint
The market project sits at the heart of the Huddersfield Blueprint, a ten-year vision to create a more vibrant and varied town centre.
It will complement the ongoing Our Cultural Heart scheme, with Phase 1 scheduled to open in summer 2026.
To minimise disruption, Kirklees Council is planning a temporary market between the current Brook Street site and the Tesco car park.
Further details on this interim provision will be released in the coming months.
If approved, construction work on the new Huddersfield Market is expected to begin in spring 2026.
