The UK Government has announced a bold initiative to secure the long-term future of steelmaking by creating a new Steel Council.
This collaborative effort, supported by up to £2.5 billion in funding through the forthcoming Steel Strategy, aims to revitalise the sector and protect steelmaking communities across the country.
Steel Council: A Partnership for Progress
The Steel Council, chaired by Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds and Jon Bolton, Chairman of the Materials Processing Institute, will convene key industry leaders, trade unions, experts, and devolved government representatives.
The Council’s mission is to tackle the challenges facing the UK steel industry, foster innovation, and establish a roadmap for sustainable growth.
The inaugural meeting, held today (7 January), marks a significant step forward in delivering the Government’s “Plan for Change,” which prioritises economic growth and national security.
“Steel is vital to our economy and security,” said Reynolds. “This Government is committed to securing a bright future for the sector by placing workers and communities at the heart of our £2.5 billion investment plan.”
A Renewed Focus on Growth and Stability
The Council’s work will inform the Government’s Steel Strategy, set to launch in the spring.
It will provide a platform for collaboration, ensuring workforce needs and economic stability are central to the revitalisation efforts.
Industry leaders such as Tata Steel and British Steel, alongside trade unions and associations, will help shape a resilient and competitive steel sector.
“This is a defining moment,” said Gareth Stace, Director-General of UK Steel. “The Steel Strategy represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to secure long-term investment and keep steelmaking at the heart of the UK economy.”
Investment and Innovation
Co-chair Jon Bolton, an industry veteran with over 40 years’ experience, emphasised the UK’s unique advantages in attracting investment.
“With demand, skills, technology, and unrivalled research and development, coupled with a supportive government, we can rejuvenate the sector.
“The Council will play a pivotal role in crafting an environmentally progressive and competitive strategy.”
Looking Ahead
The Government and the Steel Council will work together to finalise the Steel Strategy, with regular meetings planned to oversee the allocation of the £2.5 billion fund.
This initiative aims to not only safeguard jobs but also drive investment into steel communities, ensuring a sustainable future for the industry.
This partnership highlights the Government’s commitment to transforming UK steelmaking and delivering economic stability, fulfilling its promise to prioritise growth and innovation in critical sectors.
