New Special School in Deighton Gets Green Light

Plans to build a new special school in Deighton have taken another major step forward.

The project, a partnership between Kirklees Council and Wellspring Academy Trust, aims to rebuild and relocate Joseph Norton Academy, creating a new learning environment for students with Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties.

Currently based in Scissett, Joseph Norton Academy’s ageing buildings and limited capacity of just 63 places have prompted the need for expansion.

The new development, based at the former Deighton Centre site, will double the capacity to 132 places and aims to offer new facilities in a more central location, better meeting the needs of children and young people.

One reason for the location change is the reduced travel distance for many students, offering a more convenient and accessible location.

This project is part of a broader initiative by Kirklees Council and its partners to enhance support for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Next Steps

With planning permission now granted, The council will now look to appoint a contractor to begin construction.

Tom Brailsford, Strategic Director for Children’s Services, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying: “This is another great example of how we’re supporting children and young people with SEND so they can achieve the best possible outcomes.

“We’re ambitious for all of our children, especially those who need extra help, and the new school will be a fantastic addition to our local education offer.

“Joseph Norton Academy caters for a wide range of needs and will have better facilities, more space, a more suitable location and around double the current number of places.

Mr Brailsford added that there has been an increasing demand for specialist school provision.

“We are investing in our children and families, not only to provide what’s needed but to enhance lives for many years to come.”

Specialist Centre

The new school will be designed as an environment that is specifically tailored to support the students who attend.

David Shepherd, Strategic Director for Growth and Regeneration, added: “We have worked closely with Joseph Norton Academy and the Wellspring Academy Trust in designing high-quality facilities, both indoors and outdoors”.

A spokesperson for Wellspring Academy Trust said: “We are absolutely delighted with the news that planning permission has been granted. This is a significant step forward for our pupils.

“We look forward to working closely with the local authority to progress the build and ensure a fantastic new learning environment for future generations.”
