Free brass band spectacular set to launch half-term celebrations in Wakefield

Brass bands will once again take centre stage at the National Coal Mining Museum for England as the much-anticipated Bold as Brass festival returns this spring.

Music lovers and families alike are being invited to the Wakefield-based museum on Saturday 23 May for a full day of live performances, as the popular free event showcases the very best in brass band music.

A Celebration of Brass Band Heritage

Supported by Brass Bands England, the annual event brings together a diverse programme of performances, blending traditional marches with contemporary showpieces. Running throughout the day, the festival promises an engaging and varied musical experience for visitors of all ages.

Set within the atmospheric surroundings of the historic museum, Bold as Brass offers more than just music. Attendees can enjoy a relaxed day discovering new bands while soaking up the passion and pride that define Britain’s brass band tradition.

Family Entertainment and Activities

Alongside the performances, the event will feature a wide range of family-friendly activities, entertainment, and food and drink options, making it an ideal day out during the spring season.

The festival also marks the beginning of the school half-term holidays, launching a week of activities at the museum. Highlights include a pop-up beach with games and ice creams, spring scavenger hunts, free daily crafts, interactive storytelling with living history performers, guided tours, and creative workshops such as kite making and family painting sessions.

Visitors can also take part in horsekeeper talks, explore interactive galleries, and even try out Minecraft-themed escape rooms.
