The first-ever Community Archives and Heritage Group (CAHG) conference to be held in the North of England is set to take place at the University of Huddersfield on Thursday, 19th June 2025.

The event will shine a spotlight on how communities and individuals work to preserve and share local histories and traditions, celebrating both tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

The Community Archives and Heritage Group (CAHG) is a national group which aims to support and promote community archives in the UK & Ireland.

It brings together bodies and organisations concerned with community archives and provides a forum for the regular exchange of views and information.

A key feature of the conference will be presentations from community groups across the North of England and beyond, showcasing how they engage local people and the wider public with historical documents, photographs, storytelling, oral histories, song, traditional knowledge, and crafts—both online and in person.

A central theme of the conference is community ownership of heritage, highlighting how groups are taking the lead in preserving and narrating their own histories.

While many presentations will focus on independent community-led initiatives, some will also explore successful collaborations between community groups and institutions such as museums, libraries, and archives.

The event will also include hands-on skills workshops and a dedicated ‘marketplace and hub’—a space for participants to display their work, host stalls, and take part in poster sessions, offering ample networking opportunities.
