Visitors Invited to Journey 140 Metres Below Ground in Immersive Experience

The National Coal Mining Museum for England is delighted to announce the reopening of its legendary underground tour, following a short closure to replace essential winder machinery.

This crucial upgrade ensures that visitors can continue to explore the depths of Britain’s coal mining heritage for years to come.

Underground Tours Resume in April

From early April, visitors will once again have the unique opportunity to descend 140 metres below the surface and experience life as a coal miner through the ages.

Led by former miners, the tour provides a deeply immersive and educational experience, enriched by personal stories and firsthand insights into the history of coal mining in England.

For families with younger children under the age of five, the museum offers an alternative overground experience.

The Time Tunnel attraction uses digital technology, sights, sounds, and even smells to bring the history of coal mining to life in an engaging and interactive way.
