As a cold snap grips the UK with temperatures plummeting and snow and ice sweeping across West Yorkshire and the rest of the UK, the RSPCA is urging the public to take action to protect animals during these challenging conditions.

With The Met Office issuing yellow and Amber warnings for ice and snow across the region this weekend, the animal welfare charity has shared some practical advice to ensure pets, livestock, and wildlife remain safe and comfortable.

Protecting Pets at Home

RSPCA pet welfare specialist Dr Sam Gaines advised: “It’s crucial to help our animal friends during this cold weather. By following our simple tips, we can ensure animals stay safe and healthy this winter.”

• Outdoor Pets: Move rabbits and guinea pigs indoors if temperatures fall below freezing. For guinea pigs, housing them indoors when temperatures dip below 15°C (59°F) is recommended. If keeping them outside, provide extra bedding, insulated covers, and a sheltered, elevated hutch.
• Cats: Ensure cats have access to a warm indoor space with dry, draught-free bedding.
• Dogs: Dry pets thoroughly if they get wet or cold, and consider coats or jumpers for elderly or sickly dogs. Avoid frozen water bodies during walks, and protect paws from snow build-up.
• Birds: Keep enclosures warm and windproof, provide additional food and fresh water, and ensure water doesn’t freeze over.
• Fish Ponds: To avoid toxic gas build-up, prevent complete ice cover by gently melting holes in the ice using a saucepan of hot water placed on the surface—never use boiling water, antifreeze, or salt.

Supporting Wildlife

Cold weather can be especially tough for wildlife. Here’s how you can help:

• Food and Water: Leave suitable foods like seeds, fruits, or mealworms for birds. Keep bird baths ice-free and clean.
• Hibernating Animals: Check wood and leaf piles for creatures like hedgehogs and frogs before lighting bonfires.
• Flood Risks: Stay informed about potential flooding via official channels, and avoid putting yourself in danger to rescue wildlife. Call the RSPCA for emergencies.

Caring for Livestock and Horses

Livestock and horses also need extra attention during winter:

• Provide adequate shelter, dry bedding, and additional feed as grass becomes scarce.
• Check water troughs daily to ensure they’re ice-free.
• Use waterproof rugs and inspect hooves regularly for issues like mud fever or loose shoes.

Dangerous Winter Products

Common winter items such as antifreeze and rock salt can be toxic to animals. Store these products safely and contact a vet immediately if you suspect your pet has ingested any harmful substance.

The RSPCA stresses that meeting the needs of outdoor dogs is particularly difficult in freezing temperatures and strongly advises against keeping dogs outside.
