Prepare for a captivating fusion of poetry and music as Poet Laureate Simon Armitage and his acclaimed band LYR take the stage as part of the Huddersfield Literature Festival on Thursday, April 11th, 2024. The performance will take place at the iconic Lawrence Batley Theatre.

This unforgettable evening promises a rich literary and musical journey. Armitage will deliver a poignant poetry performance, showcasing the breadth of his talent and his celebrated sensitivity to the rhythms of language.

Following a brief intermission, LYR will take over, with bandmates Richard Walters (singer-songwriter) and Patrick Pearson (multi-instrumentalist and producer) weaving evocative soundscapes around Armitage’s poetic words.

“Never Good with Horses,” Armitage’s latest collection of lyrics, highlights his remarkable ability to merge poetry and song. LYR’s soaring melodies and ambient instrumentation promise an immersive and enchanting experience for the audience.

About Simon Armitage:

Simon Armitage, the current Poet Laureate, hails from West Yorkshire. Acclaimed for both his original poetry and translations of medieval works like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, he’s garnered numerous awards, including the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry. But his talents extend beyond the page. Armitage writes and performs music with the band LYR, even nabbing an Ivor Novello Award for songwriting. His recent collection, Never Good with Horses, showcases his lyrical prowess. A versatile writer, Armitage has penned two novels and three nonfiction bestsellers, while his radio show, The Poet Laureate Has Gone to His Shed, entertains BBC audiences. He’s also a playwright, with his award-winning Hansel and Gretel currently gracing the stage at Shakespeare’s Globe. Currently, Armitage holds the prestigious position of Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds.
