They Served With Honour: A Windrush Educational Resource

Bringing the lived experiences of our local heroes into the classroom.

We are delighted to introduce “Huddersfield Windrush Veterans: They Served with Honour,” a comprehensive educational resource designed to accompany the powerful documentary, The Armed Services: Huddersfield’s Windrush Forgotten Veterans.

This initiative places the stories of Huddersfield’s Caribbean veterans at the very heart of the learning experience. By sharing their journeys, these men and women invite a new generation to reflect on their own histories, identities, and life choices.

The Power of Lived Experience

For young people, seeing the ‘superheroes’ of their own community speak openly is more than just inspiring—it is transformative. This resource bridges the gap between past and present, giving students powerful tools to navigate their own paths while connecting historical events to their modern lives.

A Flexible Learning Tool

Whether you are a teacher leading a class or a student engaging in digital self-paced learning, this resource is designed for flexibility. It brings history to life through:

  • Engaging Media: Watch film excerpts and animations that make history accessible and vivid.

  • Structured Teaching: Teachers can utilise ready-made presentations to lead meaningful lessons.

  • Curriculum Alignment: The content is creatively aligned with the National Curriculum for History, English, and PSHCE.

  • Deep Exploration: Learners and teachers can move at their own pace, allowing time for discussion and deeper understanding.

Why This Matters

Too often, the vital contributions of Windrush veterans are absent from Britain’s mainstream historical narrative. We aim to change that.

This resource does more than fill a gap; it redefines the story. It empowers young people to question historical perspectives, connect personal and community histories, and ultimately see themselves as part of history in the making.
