Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is EA’s single-player Star Wars game that was released near the end of last year, and with its success over the past year, you can be sure to see more like it in the future.
After the challenging year that everyone has experienced, you would be forgiven for forgetting that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order exists.
Despite this, however, the game has seen massive success this year and is one of America’s best selling games over the last 12 months.
Industry analyst Mat Piscatella announced this. He stated that Fallen Order is second in the charts, only being beaten out by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
Even for a Star Wars game, this is impressive. This is especially so when you consider that it has surpassed the likes of Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Both of which are also in the top ten.
For any typical video game developer, this would be news for celebration for them. However, for EA, it is also embarrassing when you consider their comments on single-player games.
It was only three years ago now that EA cancelled another single-player game set in the Star Wars universe and was being made by Visceral Games. The reason they gave was that this sort of game is not popular among gamers.
EA’s chief financial officer had stated when asked about the cancellation in 2017 about the game in question (which was being headed by the creator of Uncharted, one of the greatest single-player franchises in the past 15 years) said it was a ‘much more linear game, that people don’t like as much today as they did five years ago or 10 years ago.’
As, like many of EA’s comments regarding what consumers want, it doesn’t age very well.
The initial success of Fallen Order led people to believe that a sequel was all but guaranteed, and it was later confirmed that it is currently in development.
So hopefully, EA takes a closer look at this and develops more single-player Star Wars games. This should be even more so with the recent success of Star Wars: Squadrons, and it is proving to be a lucrative market for them.
