Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice Call Out for Brave Barefoot Fundraisers

Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice is looking for fundraisers big and small to raise money for their vital services by walking on fire, or Lego, this October half-term.

This will be held at Russell House on Wednesday 30th October, the firewalk will see participants walking barefoot over burning hot coals to raise money for the charity which supports children with life-shortening conditions and their families.

Or supporters can choose to walk over Lego instead.

Participants at the event will receive training and advice from Guinness World Firewalking Record Breaker Scott Bell from UK Firewalk, who walked 100 metres over hot coals in 2006. Firewalkers at Forget Me Not’s event will receive a “gentle“ introduction to the activity, walking 5 metres over coals burning up to 550 degrees Centigrade.

The Firewalk and Legowalk are sponsored by Huddersfield-based precision engineering company Reliance Precision.

Sarah Jackson, who braved the Forget Me Not Firewalk in 2021, raising £400 for the charity with her husband Rick said: “I took part in the last Forget Me Not Firewalk and would recommend it to everyone. Although extremely apprehensive (ok, scared!), I was put at ease by the professionals that ran it and ended up walking across the coals twice! Not only did I get the opportunity to try something I never thought I would, it was a really fun day at the children’s hospice.”

Vicky Lough, Events Manager at Forget Me Not said: “Walking over hot coals is on lots of people’s bucket list, it’s such a buzz for people to brave this challenge while being cheered on by friends, family and fellow firewalkers. It’s fantastic that we also have the Lego Walk as well so the younger ones can enjoy a challenge of their own. Just picture the pride of returning to school after half term with a medal that shows how fearless you are!”

“Events like this are vital in supporting Forget Me Not. Only 10% of our income comes from the government or the NHS, so the support of people taking on our Firewalk or Lego walk, and getting their friends and family to sponsor them really makes a difference. From the word go Forget Me Not has only existed because of the support of our fabulous community in West Yorkshire, and it’s thanks to them we can continue to be here to support local children with life-shortening conditions, their families and families living with loss.”

The minimum age for firewalkers is 12, and for the Lego Walk, it is 5.
