On Friday 19th July, local teenager Robert Richardson (aged 16 from Holmfirth) completed Outward Bound’s Pinnacle expedition, a 19-day wild camping experience known for its rigorous challenges and unforgettable rewards.  Robert, along with eleven other young adventurers, embarked on a journey in the Scottish Highlands, based out of Loch Eil near Fort William.

The Pinnacle is Outward Bound’s most demanding expedition, with fewer than 100 young people from around the world completing it each year. Designed for those with previous outdoor experience, the course pushes participants to their limits and beyond.

Throughout the 19 days, Robert and his peers camped under the stars, navigated through some of the remotest corners of the UK, and conquered the tallest mountains in the British Isles. They honed essential outdoor skills such as navigation, camp craft, and mountaineering, while also engaging in challenging activities like canoeing and rock climbing. A highlight of the course is the famed “solo” experience, where each participant spent time alone in nature to reflect and grow.

Reflecting on his journey, Robert said: “Despite the many struggles that we faced and overcame, like the wind and rain, I am really proud to say that we pushed through it all together and made it as a team. I enjoyed this experience so much, and it made many happy memories and so many new friends that I hope to stay in contact with for years to come.”

James Tedham, an Outward Bound Instructor who directed this year’s expedition praised the group’s accomplishments and commented that: “Robert and his peers embodied a spirit of adventure and resilience that the Pinnacle is all about. Watching these young people conquer their fears and grow in confidence was truly inspiring. They returned as a solid team with memories that will last a lifetime.”

Every year, Outward Bound works with 25,000 young people and is committed to making these experiences accessible to all. Many summer participants receive significant funding through Outward Bound’s Adventure Fund, ensuring that economic constraints do not hold young people back from embarking on these life-changing experiences.
