By Joshua Robinson –
In Kirklees, there are many children and young people in the care of the local authority who would benefit from a positive adult role model. This scheme is run by the Look After Children Independent Service Team at Kirklees Council.
Part of the role of an Independent Visitor will be to meet once a month with a child in care and partake in an activity together, such as bowling, going for a walk, or visiting a café.
Expenses are paid and training will be provided before an applicant is matched to a young person. This is a great opportunity if people are interested in working with young people or thinking about fostering or adopting.
Independent Visitors:
- Must be committed to the safety and well-being of young people.
- Must have the skills to befriend, listen to, and support young people.
- Will receive a thorough induction, peer group support, ongoing supervision, and development.
- Have a fantastic opportunity to enhance their knowledge, and skills and gain valuable experience.
- Go on enjoyable activities and have fun.

Independent Visitors will visit their young person regularly (approximately 4-10 hours per month). This might be more often, to begin with whilst the young person and Independent Visitor get to know each other.
A person can be an Independent Visitor for as long as themselves and the child or young person are happy to keep visiting each other. This might be for a short time or many years.
It is asked of volunteers to commit a minimum of one year to the scheme.
Applicants for the role of an Independent Visitor must be 18 years old and above.
The special requirements for the role include:
- Application form required.
- References required.
- DBS (criminal record check that the organisation will organise).
