On Tuesday 8th October, members present at the Kirklees Council Cabinet meeting approved a proposal that will see changes to three of the borough’s five Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), saving the council nearly £200k over the next two financial years.

As part of saving proposals listed in the 2024/25 budget approved in March, a review of operating days at all HWRCs took place, and it was decided to close Nab Lane, Birstall and change operating days at two other sites.

Proposals submitted to the Cabinet, which are now approved, would see Nab Lane HWRC close down and revised opening days implemented at Bromley Farm and Meltham HWRCs.

Councillor Munir Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Environment and Highways, said to Kirklees Together: “Now proposals are approved, peak opening times will be maintained across the remaining HWRC sites whilst meeting financial targets for the service.”

“We have to make difficult decisions in the current financial climate but this proposal still leaves Birstall and Birkenshaw residents with the industry-recommended journey time to their nearest HWRC. The closure of Nab Lane will also put Kirklees at a level of service comparable to that of Leeds, Bradford, and Wakefield when comparing density of provision.”

“With the tip at Nab Lane needing major modernisation and investment over the coming years, this is one of many cost-saving measures being implemented across the council, as set out in the annual budget earlier this year.”
