Councillors have approved the release of over £5.4 million from the overall project budget to progress Phase Two of the Our Cultural Heart regeneration scheme in Huddersfield.

The funding will support the next stage of contractor procurement and design development for Phase Two, marking a significant step forward in the town’s ambitious transformation plans.

New Museum and Art Gallery

Earlier this year, the council outlined its vision for Phase Two, which will see the four-storey former library – one of Huddersfield town centre’s most cherished landmarks – repurposed as a state-of-the-art museum and art gallery.

The venue will also include a 50-seat café and an outdoor terrace, enhancing its appeal as a cultural and social hub.

A key feature of the plans is a carefully designed extension, aimed at improving accessibility and strengthening the building’s integration with the wider town centre.

The project seeks to preserve the library’s historic character while adapting it for modern use.

Town Centre Regeneration

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, highlighted the broader impact of the project: “Releasing the funds demonstrates our commitment to delivering something everyone can be proud of and doing that in a way that delivers real changes on the ground in the next few years.

“Regeneration is not just about bricks and mortar. Our ambition is to give local people and visitors more reasons to spend time in the town centre.

“By increasing footfall, and in turn commercial opportunities, our plans will also benefit existing and future businesses from all sectors.

“Thriving businesses in turn provide employment opportunities for our communities.”

Progress on Phase One

Meanwhile, construction on Phase One of the Our Cultural Heart scheme is well underway.

The former Queensgate Market building is currently being transformed into a new library hub and a vibrant food hall, set to bring new life to the area.
