Ambitious plans to construct a new police station in Huddersfield have taken a significant step forward after being approved by planning officials.

Approval and Construction Timeline

West Yorkshire Police and the Mayor of West Yorkshire have welcomed the decision by Kirklees Council’s Planning Committee to grant permission for the station’s development.

Demolition of the existing building at the site, located off Broadway, is set to commence this spring.

Construction of the new two-story police facility is anticipated to begin in early summer.

A Modern Facility for Huddersfield

The new L-shaped building will include a public enquiry counter and will house all Huddersfield Policing Teams currently operating from the existing Castlegate station.

This ensures that local officers will remain based within the communities they serve.

Additionally, the facility will include dedicated on-site parking for police vehicles, reducing potential disruption for businesses and commuters in the area.

Wider Policing Strategy

The Huddersfield project is being developed alongside the construction of the new Kirklees District Police Headquarters in Dewsbury.

Once completed, the Dewsbury headquarters will be the larger of the two facilities, featuring a public enquiry counter and a new custody suite with increased cell space compared to the current provision in Kirklees.

The Dewsbury headquarters is expected to be operational by early 2026, with the new Huddersfield station projected to open later that year.

Until then, the existing police stations at Castlegate in Huddersfield and Aldams Road in Dewsbury will remain operational.

Once staff and equipment have been fully transferred, the old buildings will be sold.

Police and Mayoral Endorsement

Chief Superintendent Jim Griffiths, District Commander of Kirklees Police, expressed his satisfaction with the project’s progress, stating: “It is clearly very positive news that planning permission for the Huddersfield station has been granted.

“A lot of work has been ongoing behind the scenes, and now that permission is in place, we can move forward with the demolition of the existing building ahead of construction.”

He added: “It is common knowledge that our existing police buildings in Huddersfield and Dewsbury were reaching the end of their operational lives.

“Seeing new, replacement buildings become a reality is incredibly exciting.

“They represent a huge investment in policing in Kirklees, and I’m really pleased that residents in both towns will see new stations with help desks, housing the officers they see on their streets.”

The Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, also praised the development, saying: “It is great news that the green light has been given to start work on a new, modern, and efficient police station for Huddersfield.

“This is a milestone investment for policing in Kirklees, and the rest of the region, as we continue building a safer, fairer West Yorkshire.”
