West Yorkshire Police’s Huddersfield Town Centre Proactive Team (HTCPT) has launched a new initiative utilising plain clothes officers to tackle crime discreetly.

This proactive approach yielded immediate results during their first operation in Huddersfield Bus Station last week.

Undercover officers seized knives and suspected drugs, leading to the arrest of one individual on suspicion of possession with intent to supply controlled substances and weapons offences.

Another person was dealt with through a community resolution for engaging in anti-social behaviour.

Sustained Effort

This successful sting marks the beginning of a sustained effort by the HTCPT.

The team maintains a daily presence within the town centre, targeting repeat offenders involved in various criminal activities, including retail theft and drink-related disorderly conduct.

Their recent work has resulted in several convictions, demonstrating their commitment to creating a safer environment.

New Strategy

“Commuters and residents should be able to go about their business safely,” said Inspector Mark Pattinson of Kirklees Police.

“These new patrols are intended to make life difficult for anyone tempted to use the bus station for criminal purposes.”

Inspector Pattinson explained that while high-visibility uniformed patrols remain a crucial element of their strategy, the new undercover approach allows officers to blend in with the crowd, enabling them to observe and apprehend criminals before they can act.

He urged the public to play their part by reporting any suspicious activity to the HTCPT on 101 or through the West Yorkshire Police website.

The success of the initial operation suggests that these undercover patrols will be instrumental in deterring crime and ensuring a safer environment for everyone who uses the bus station.
