In a groundbreaking move, the NHS Race and Health Observatory (RHO) has unveiled a compelling manifesto urging the next government to prioritise addressing racial and ethnic health disparities in the healthcare system. Backed by extensive research and community input, the manifesto outlines seven key commitments essential for creating a more equitable healthcare system for all individuals.

The manifesto emphasises the urgent need to focus on maternal and neonatal health equity to reduce preventable deaths in these vulnerable populations. It also calls for accelerated efforts to ensure mental health equity of access and outcomes, empowering leadership and enhancing accountability for equity among patients and the healthcare workforce.

Furthermore, the manifesto stresses the importance of meaningful community engagement in policy development, integrating health equity into policy advocacy, prioritising inclusivity in data for evidence-informed approaches, and positioning the UK as a global leader in health equity research and innovation.

Professor Habib Naqvi, Chief Executive of the NHS Race and Health Observatory, highlighted the significance of these commitments in building a healthcare system that is efficient, inclusive, and cost-effective while delivering the best quality care to all individuals.

Recent research commissioned by the NHS RHO has highlighted racial inequalities within the healthcare system. A review in 2022 revealed instances of racism in hospitals and GP surgeries negatively impacting the health of Black communities. The report also exposed ethnic inequalities in mental health sectioning, with Black patients facing higher rates of restraint and seclusion. Additionally, Black African nurses were found to be more likely to experience racist abuse and pay disparities.

The NHS RHO remains dedicated to advancing racial equity in healthcare by advocating for policy changes, supporting implementation, and amplifying the voices of marginalised communities. By addressing systemic disparities, the Observatory aims to create a more equitable healthcare system that serves all individuals equally.

The NHS RHO urges the new government and policymakers to prioritise pursuing a healthcare system that values diversity, promotes inclusivity, and ensures equitable access to quality care for everyone in our community.
