Families, locals, history enthusiasts and vintage lovers are being invited to experience life in the 1940s as the National Coal Mining Museum hosts a special themed day on Saturday 20^th June, 10 am to 4 pm, with free entry.

The Museum, situated on the border of Kirklees and Wakefield, will have a packed programme of entertainment and activities designed to celebrate the spirit of wartime Britain.

Music, Dancing and Vintage Style

Visitors can enjoy live performances featuring music from the era, browse vintage market stalls and admire displays and demonstrations, including classic vehicles.

Dance enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to join lively sessions led by Want 2 Jive, bringing the style and energy of the 1940s to life.

Organisers are encouraging guests to embrace the theme by dressing in clothing inspired by the 1940s period, with the Best Dressed winning a prize.

Wartime Skills Brought to Life

The event will also feature a range of hands-on activities inspired by wartime resourcefulness.

Visitors can take part in “make do and mend” workshops, learn practical upcycling skills and attend “grow your own” demonstrations exploring the sustainable practices that became essential during the Second World War.

The activities are designed to showcase the resourcefulness and community spirit that helped people adapt during challenging times, bringing an element of nostalgia.

Traditional Treats and Family Fun

For those looking to add a touch of nostalgia to their visit, the Museum’s café will be serving traditional afternoon tea accompanied by live 1940s music.

Advance booking is required for the afternoon tea, as places are expected to fill quickly.

Young visitors will be able to enjoy a pop-up beach experience, while additional attractions throughout the day include storytelling sessions about home life during the 1940s, horsekeeper talks, pony feeding opportunities and rides on the popular Paddy Train.

The event aims to give visitors a chance to experience the sights, sounds and stories of the decade while also learning more about the coal mining industry, which played a vital role in powering Britain throughout the period.
