Branch launches its biggest-ever fundraising appeal with major redevelopment already underway

The RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford & District Branch has launched an ambitious £4 million fundraising appeal to completely transform its ageing Wade Street animal centre by July 2027.

The campaign includes participation in The Big Give Christmas Challenge from 2–9 December, during which donations will be doubled through match funding.

Major Rebuild Underway

Construction has already begun on The Really Big ReFURb, a two-phase redevelopment designed to create a modern, energy-efficient facility capable of meeting the highest standards of animal welfare for decades to come.

The centre’s 45-year-old kennels have now been demolished, with dogs safely relocated to temporary accommodation and cats moved into a newly soundproofed cattery.

The rebuild became unavoidable when the existing kennels fell behind modern welfare standards.

With demand for rescue spaces rising sharply, the independently funded local branch, which operates separately from the National RSPCA, is turning to the community to help deliver what it describes as a once-in-a-generation project.

Rising Need for Rescue Support

Last year alone, the centre cared for 449 animals, and the need for rescue spaces continues to grow.

Despite construction taking place on site, the charity will remain open throughout to ensure vulnerable animals receive uninterrupted care.

A recent example underscores the urgency. In late October, staff discovered a tiny kitten abandoned at the centre’s door — cold, frightened, and alone.

Named Bonfire, he made a full recovery and has since been adopted. His story reflects why the redevelopment is considered essential and why services must continue during the rebuild.

Project Milestones

• New kennels completed: Summer 2026
• New cattery completed: Summer 2027
• Fundraising target deadline: July 2027

The new kennels will offer quieter, safer spaces that promote healing and reduce stress, while the new cattery will include natural light in every pen, more enriching environments, and a dedicated area for feral cats.

New adoption rooms will provide calm, homelike spaces for families meeting animals during the rehoming process.

Call for Community Support

With construction underway, the branch is calling on individuals and businesses to support the appeal.

Donations can be made to The Really Big ReFURb, the Christmas Wish Appeal, or through The Big Give in early December, where contributions will be doubled.

“This project isn’t just a rebuild, it’s a fresh start for every animal who comes through our doors,” said Lauren Moore, Fundraising Manager.

“With over £2.5 million already raised, we now need a huge community push to reach our target.

“Every donation will help secure the future of this centre and ensure we can continue to be there for animals like Bonfire.”
