Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust’s Cancer Prehabilitation Team, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Charity, and the Ella Dawson Foundation have teamed up with Move Against Cancer to launch 5K Your Way physical activity support groups in Huddersfield and Halifax.
The benefits of keeping active are known to help people cope with cancer treatment. Movement through and beyond a cancer diagnosis can help reduce treatment-related fatigue, preserve cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness, reduce the side effects of chemotherapy, and help prevent recurrence.
Importantly, physical activity can help to improve psychological and emotional well-being and is a fun and great way to meet people.
5K Your Way is a community-based initiative from the Move Charity to encourage those living with and beyond cancer, families, friends, and those working in cancer services to walk, jog, run, cheer, or volunteer at a designated 5k Your Way park run event, taking place on the last Saturday of each month.
Anyone affected by cancer is welcome. Participants include those living with or beyond cancer, family, friends, those that have lost a loved one to cancer and health care professionals.
Every group is led by at least one volunteer 5K Your Way Ambassador, who acts as the focal point for the group. Participants will receive a very warm and friendly welcome, and everyone is encouraged to do as little or as much as they want or simply join together for a drink and a chat.
Move Charity launched 5K Your Way in 2018 and already has over 87 5K Your Way groups running successfully throughout the UK and Ireland
Georgie Freeman, 5K Your Way Operations Manager, said:
“At 5k Your Way, we encourage people to focus on what they CAN do. We want to give people the confidence to go out and be physically active and to feel the benefits of exercise both physically and mentally. We are absolutely delighted to be working with Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust’s Cancer Prehabilitation team, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Charity and Ella Dawson Foundation to bring 5K Your Way to Huddersfield and Halifax. Over the years we have seen the huge impact 5K Your Way has on physical and mental health as well as building a wonderful, supportive and inspiring community in each group. We are super excited to launch these two new groups and grateful to Nicky Hill and her team at CHFT and Ella Dawson Foundation, CHFT Charity, Active Calderdale and TSL Kirklees for supporting the delivery and funding of these two new groups.’’
Nicky Hill, Prehabilitation Lead, CHFT, said:
“It has been a privilege working together with Jane and Tasha from the Ella Dawson Foundation and Georgie from the 5K Your Way Team in setting up the Halifax and Huddersfield groups. I’m really excited for the people of Halifax and Huddersfield affected by cancer to have this as an opportunity to be active. We’ve had great funding support from local partner organisations and have an enthusiastic team of ambassadors and supporters to guide people around the 5K Your Way routes. I’ll be there at Halifax on the last Saturday of the month and look forward to welcoming people.”
Tasha Dawson, Cancer Rehabilitation Practitioner at the Ella Dawson Foundation, said:
“We are very proud to be working with Move Charity and Calderdale and Huddersfield’s NHS Cancer Prehabilitation Team to bring 5K Your Way to Huddersfield. We know from Ella’s own experience and from the young people with cancer we support each week, just how powerful physical activity is through and beyond cancer. We are very excited to be ambassadors for 5K Your Way in Huddersfield and are really looking forward to welcoming and supporting people at 5K Your Way on the last Saturday of each month.”
5K Your Way will be launched in Huddersfield on Saturday 30th September in Greenhead Park with a 8.45am meet for a 9am start and then on the last Saturday of each month.
