Most services running as normal, but check before you travel, says train operator

Train operator Northern is encouraging people across the North of England to take advantage of the early May bank holiday weekend by travelling by train, while reminding customers to plan due to a handful of engineering works.

The vast majority of Northern services will run as scheduled across the weekend, offering an easy and scenic way to explore the region.

However, some lines will be affected by engineering works, and Huddersfield station will be closed on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May for upgrade works related to the Transpennine Route Upgrade.

Disruptions on Select Routes

Engineering work will affect travel on several key routes, including:

• Manchester Victoria – Newton-le-Willows – Chester/Liverpool

• Manchester – Preston (via Wigan North Western)

• Manchester Victoria – Clitheroe

• Leeds – Nottingham

While most trains will run as usual, services on these routes may experience delays, diversions, or replacement transport.

A reduced timetable is also in place on Sundays across the North West, so passengers should double-check timetables before heading out.

Busy Weekend Expected for Magic Rugby Fans

In addition to the usual bank holiday footfall, Newcastle is hosting the Super League Magic Weekend on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 May at St James’ Park.

Thousands of rugby fans are expected to travel from across the region, so Northern is warning of busier-than-usual services on those days.

Matt Rice, Chief Operating Officer for Northern, said: “We’re hoping for some fantastic weather over the early May bank holiday weekend, and there’s no better way to get out there and enjoy it than by train.

“Whilst we’ve got some engineering work taking place on a handful of our routes, the vast majority of Northern trains will be running as normal.

“A reduced timetable is still in place on Sunday across the North West, so customers should make sure they check before they travel as trains may be busier.”
