Young players train with Tom Burgess and secure kit, equipment and Grand Final tickets

Batley ARLFC’s Under 8s are celebrating after winning a major prize in a regional rugby league competition run by Northern Trains.

The youngsters not only received a huge package of new kit and equipment, but also enjoyed a special training session led by Huddersfield Giants star Tom Burgess earlier this week.

A Day to Remember

The session was followed by a prize presentation from Kerry Peters, Northern’s Regional Director for Yorkshire, who praised the team’s enthusiasm and commitment to the sport.

The club’s winnings included 30 full playing kits made by Oxen, hoodies, tracksuit pants, rugby boots, water bottles, bibs and tackle shields.

On top of that, the youngsters and their families will head to two of rugby league’s biggest events, with 30 tickets for both the 2025 Super League Grand Final and the Magic Weekend.

Batley’s Winning Entry

Batley ARLFC won after entering a competition launched earlier this year to celebrate grassroots rugby across the North of England.

More than 750 clubs, schools and community teams submitted short videos or photos showcasing why they love the sport.

Coach and volunteer Dan Winner said the team were thrilled with the outcome: “We’re extremely grateful to Northern Trains for their generous support. The training equipment and clothing they’ve provided is invaluable to the development and enjoyment of the players.

“We appreciate Tom Burgess coming to run a fantastic coaching session for our kids. The players had an amazing time and learned so much.

“We’d also like to give a special thanks to Lorna, one of our players’ parents, for taking the time to put together that fantastic video of the kids to win the competition.”*

Recognising Passion Across the North

While Batley’s youngsters scooped the top prize, runners-up included Cottingham Tigers Under 11s, Keighley Albion Under 10s, Rochdale Mayfield Under 12 Girls, Warrington Girls Community Rugby League Under 13s and Saddleworth Rangers Under 9s.

Each received equipment and tickets to the Magic Weekend and Grand Final.

Kerry Peters said she was impressed by all the entries: “It was great to meet the players and coaches in Batley today and present them with their prizes.

“I’m sure they will make the most of this kit and equipment, and I hope they enjoy the Grand Final in October.

“We’d also like to congratulate the runners-up and thank all of the sides that entered this year’s competition.

“Our judges were really impressed by the entries, as they show just how passionate the players and coaches are about their clubs and the sport.”
