£500 raised for Rainbow Baby Bank as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s community-first campaign
A groundbreaking initiative in Heckmondwike is proving that even the smallest actions can spark big change.
By simply binning their litter, residents have raised £500 for a vital local charity — and it’s only the beginning.
The donation was presented by Spen Valley MP Kim Leadbeater to Rainbow Baby Bank, the first of three community-nominated charities to benefit from the “Bin it For Good” campaign.
The initiative forms part of Keep Britain Tidy’s wider Love Where You Live: Heckmondwike programme, which aims to reconnect residents with their town and encourage pride in their shared environment.
A Cleaner Town, A Stronger Community
Bin it For Good rewards responsible behaviour with real support for local causes.
The more rubbish correctly disposed of in Market Square’s new smart bins, the more money goes to charity, up to £500 per month.
The first month of the campaign has already seen a dramatic 52% reduction in litter on the ground.
Rainbow Baby Bank, based in the heart of Heckmondwike, is the first local organisation to benefit.
The charity provides disadvantaged families across Kirklees with essential new and pre-loved baby items, at a time when demand has surged due to the cost-of-living crisis.
“A Simple Idea Making a Big Difference”
On presenting the cheque, Kim Leadbeater MBE, Labour MP for Spen Valley, said: “I’m thrilled to be able to present this donation.
“It’s inspiring to see such a simple idea making a big difference, both in keeping Heckmondwike cleaner and supporting brilliant local causes.”
Samantha Cottam, Rainbow Baby Bank Manager, echoed the importance of local support: “We all want to see a cleaner, tidier Heckmondwike and we’re doing this together by supporting this fantastic initiative.
“The money that has been raised, by simply disposing of rubbish, will make a huge difference to our charity.
“The number of families needing our help has increased dramatically due to the cost of living crisis. Small charities, like ours, need your support more than ever.”
Next Up: Brighter Grays and Magic Wishing Well
With Rainbow Baby Bank having received the first donation, funds raised from continued bin use in Market Square will now go to Brighter Grays, followed in August by Magic Wishing Well, a local food bank.
A spokesperson for Brighter Grays shared their enthusiasm: “We are very passionate about Heckmondwike as this is where our groups first began and where our office is now based. It feels like home to us!
“The ‘Bin it for good’ project is a fantastic idea which both means people are playing a part in keeping Heckmondwike tidy and also supporting Brighter Grays, ensuring we can continue to provide our much-needed service.”
A Model for Towns Nationwide?
Bin it For Good is the first phase of a year-long drive to bring Heckmondwike’s public spaces back to life.
Part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Litter Pact initiative, the project is supported by Kirklees Council and major brands including Coca-Cola, KFC, Mars Wrigley, McDonald’s and Nestlé.
The campaign is being closely monitored as a potential model for similar schemes across the UK, showing how grassroots action, backed by strong partnerships, can help create cleaner, greener, and more caring communities.
