Accommodation donations sought as “Travelling Blind” takes on Trans Pennine Trail to promote accessibility and raise vital funds

A blind adventurer is appealing for help from accommodation providers across the North as he prepares to walk the entire 300-mile Trans Pennine Trail to raise money for Guide Dogs UK.

Andrew Elliker-Reeve, known as “Travelling Blind”, will begin his remarkable 22-day journey on 7 September, supported by a dedicated team.

The group is calling on local hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs along the trail to donate overnight stays to help ensure every penny raised goes directly to the charity.

Turning Adversity into Advocacy

Andrew’s journey is about more than fundraising. It’s a deeply personal mission to raise awareness around accessibility and the challenges faced by people with disabilities.

In February 2020, Andrew underwent elective surgery to improve blood flow to his legs.

However, complications led to a 10-day coma. When he woke, he had lost his colon, his spleen function, and his sight.

Despite these life-altering changes, Andrew has shown immense resilience, dedicating himself to raising awareness and support for greater accessibility.

“This journey is not just about me; it’s about raising awareness and making a difference,” said Andrew.

“I hope that through this challenge, we can inspire others to see the world differently and support the cause of accessibility for all.”

Trail Partners Back the Mission

The Trans Pennine Trail partnership, which is supporting the effort, shares Andrew’s vision for a more inclusive world.

The organisation has long prioritised making the route more accessible for all, including those with limited mobility.

“We are thrilled to support Andrew in this incredible journey,” said Mandy Loach, TPT Team Leader.

“Andrew’s determination and resilience are truly inspirational. Despite the challenges he has faced, nothing stops him from achieving his goals.

“We are glad to be a part of this event and to support such a remarkable individual.”

The team is especially keen to hear from accommodation providers willing to donate rooms to support Andrew along the route, helping him and his team navigate the long distances and terrain more comfortably.

“We are incredibly grateful to hotels and local B&Bs who would be willing to donate a room for Andrew along the route,” said a spokesperson for the Trail.

“Your generosity will ensure that every penny raised goes directly to Guide Dogs UK.”
