Twelve members of West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) are joining a major humanitarian effort, as the service donates four fire engines to Ukraine.

They are part of a wider convoy that includes around 100 personnel and 26 fire engines, bringing the total number of vehicles donated since the war began to 119.

Alongside these donations, 200,000 pieces of essential equipment have been sent to Ukrainian firefighters, who continue to battle blazes and save lives amid the ongoing conflict.

Firefighters on the Frontline: The Cost of War

The war in Ukraine has taken a devastating toll on the country’s firefighting teams. Since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, 100 firefighters have lost their lives, with 431 others injured.

Four remain in captivity, while one is missing. Infrastructure has also been heavily impacted, with 411 fire stations and 1,700 fire vehicles destroyed.

Furthermore, 95 firehouses are now located in Russian-occupied territories.

Despite these immense challenges, Ukrainian firefighters continue their mission—not as combatants, but as lifesavers, risking everything to protect people and property.

UK Fire Services Unite for Ukraine

This latest convoy has been organised by UK fire and rescue services in collaboration with the UK Government, National Resilience, International Search and Rescue, FIRE AID, the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), and the Fire Industry Association.

Together, these organisations are ensuring that Ukrainian firefighters receive the tools they need to carry out their vital work.

Station Manager Simon Blackburn of WYFRS emphasised the importance of the donation: “In 2024, we received a fleet of brand-new fire engines to enhance our firefighting capabilities.

“With the appliances we replaced still in excellent condition, we felt it was only right to support this campaign.

“West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service stands with our firefighting family in Ukraine, and we hope this donation will aid their lifesaving efforts in the most dangerous conditions.”

Solidarity from the Firefighting Community

National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) Vice-Chair and Chair-Elect, Phil Garrigan, reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to Ukraine’s firefighters: “The entire UK fire and rescue community stands with our colleagues in Ukraine, as they continue to put their lives on the line in the most challenging and dangerous conditions.

“This latest donation of fire engines and equipment will help replace what has been lost in the war, providing crucial support to those working tirelessly to save lives and protect communities.

“We are incredibly proud to play even a small part in ensuring our colleagues have the resources they need.”

FIRE AID Chair, David O’Neill MBE, highlighted the ongoing need for support: “We continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine; our fire family is committed to providing ongoing aid and a lifeline in their time of need.

“This eighth convoy—the largest yet—is absolutely vital as the conflict evolves daily. Recently, we welcomed frontline and political colleagues from Ukraine to the UK, and hearing firsthand about their unimaginable challenges was deeply moving.

“FIRE AID and our partners remain dedicated to supporting Ukrainian firefighters. The statistics are staggering: more than 100 firefighters have lost their lives, and hundreds more have been injured. Our work is far from over.

“We will continue to stand by Ukraine and offer our unwavering support to those risking their lives every day.”
