Traders prepare to move into their permanent home as part of the £19.1 million Brighouse Town Deal

Construction of Brighouse’s brand-new market has officially been completed, marking a major milestone in the town’s regeneration.

The project team from Calderdale Council has now handed the keys to the markets service, allowing traders old and new to settle into their permanent home.

The new market forms a central part of the Brighouse Town Deal, which is investing £19.1 million from the UK Government in projects designed to celebrate the town’s heritage and create opportunities shaped by the community through extensive consultation and engagement.

Following the successful completion of the town’s i4.0 Hub, the market is the latest in a series of major developments.

Work on the final stage of the Brighouse Town Deal is expected to begin early next year.

Modern Market with Historic Roots

Located on a scenic canalside site, the market has been transformed over the past year into a vibrant, modern, and welcoming venue designed for the future.

The redevelopment was led by West Yorkshire-based Triton Construction, on behalf of Calderdale Council and the Brighouse Town Deal Board.

The facility now boasts 21 fixed stalls, each fitted with essential utilities such as water, drainage, and power.

There’s also space for 19 pop-up stalls, providing flexibility for visiting traders and special events.

Comfortable seating areas have been added for shoppers and visitors, alongside new decorative gates, cycle parking, and accessible entrances linking the market to the town centre via Bethel Street Car Park, Briggate, and Thornton Square.

Traders Set to Return

Traders who have been temporarily operating from Daisy Street Car Park will soon move back to the new market, joined by fresh faces drawn to the upgraded facilities.

Cllr Sarah Courtney, Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Transport, said: “We want Calderdale’s towns and places to thrive, and this milestone for Brighouse is a key part of the aspiration to build a town where history lives, communities come together, memories are made and the economy can grow.”

Cllr Silvia Dacre, Cabinet Member for Resources, added: “The market completion has been eagerly awaited by the community.

“When I visited earlier this week a resident asked me when the new market was going to open, it was great to be able to tell him that it would be in the next few weeks.

“We’re really impressed with the new facilities, which will be yet another reason for people to visit and do business in Brighouse.”

Community and Contractors Celebrate Success

Cllr Howard Blagbrough, Co-Chair of the Brighouse Town Deal Board, said: “This is a really exciting moment for Brighouse. The market is a place where the community comes together, and the new building which looks stunning will help it thrive long into the future.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has continued to support the market while it has been operating from Daisy Street Car Park, and we’re now looking forward to seeing the new market buzzing with activity from existing and new traders when they return home in the weeks ahead.”

Building for the Future

The market revitalisation is one of several Town Deal projects that will:

• Create a more attractive, safer, and cleaner town centre

• Offer a warmer welcome to visitors and improve connections to green spaces

• Provide a brand new market for today’s traders and tomorrow’s entrepreneurs

• Establish a community hub in the heart of historic Thornton Square

• Focus on apprenticeships, skills, and training, building on Brighouse’s manufacturing legacy

The Brighouse Town Deal brings together local government, businesses, voluntary organisations, community groups, and residents, working alongside Calderdale Council and Calderdale College.

The initiatives also complement the A641 Improvement Scheme, which aims to enhance accessibility for walking, cycling, and driving.
