Several homes on Walnut Lane, Dewsbury, were flooded on Tuesday 7th May, forcing residents to evacuate their homes.

The flooding persisted for over two hours, causing significant damage to four properties, particularly to their kitchens, living rooms, and gardens.

Dawn Micklethwaite, whose garden was flooded “up to [her] knees”,  said “the smell of damp” was so bad that she had to “pull the carpet up and just get it outside.”

Another resident, 47-year-old Anita Clough, was devastated by the damage to her property, which she had recently re-carpeted.

In addition to the carpets and linoleum flooring, Mrs Clough shared that her six-year-old daughter’s toy kitchen, a birthday present, had been completely ruined.

One resident was helpless as an estimated £5,000 collection of tools was swept up by the water: “Everything was floating outside. I’ve got all sorts out in the sheds – cement mixer, grinders, toolboxes… 30-years’ worth I’ve collected.”

Teresa Darnbrough, whose house was also flooded, was touched by the support of her neighbours, who came together to support the people affected, assisting them with buckets and mops to fight the incoming water.

“The community round here were brilliant,” she shared. “People I’ve never spoken to came round and helped.”

Four fire and rescue teams were reportedly sent out to secure the area and support the residents.

Yorkshire Water noted that they are arranging clean-ups in the affected homes and will “continue to support the customers impacted.”

The pipe has already been repaired and residents have had their water supply re-established.
