EPIKS launches scheme to help staff explore greener, healthier travel options

Local environmental group EPIKS (Environmental Projects in Kirklees) is giving Huddersfield businesses and workplaces the chance to save over £1,000 by hosting free e-bike and cycle maintenance sessions.

But organisations are being urged to act fast, as the offer is only available until the end of 2025.

Try an E-Bike

Through its Walk Wheel Ride “Try an e-bike” events, EPIKS provides staff with the opportunity to test a range of pedal-assist e-bikes alongside a qualified instructor.

Riders can choose a quick spin in a safe space or take part in a longer, pre-planned 30-minute ride covering two to three miles across varied terrain.

The team also shares impartial advice on buying the right e-bike, understanding road-legal requirements, and getting the most out of equipment such as locks, helmets and lights.

Because EPIKS is not a retailer, staff can expect unbiased recommendations on what to look for when purchasing.

For smaller workplaces, “Show and Tell” pop-up stalls give teams the chance to explore different e-bike models and gather essential information on buying, storage and safety.

Free Dr Bike Workshops

Alongside e-bike trials, EPIKS is also offering free “Dr Bike” workshops.

A qualified bike mechanic visits the workplace to give staff bikes a full check-up – reviewing brakes, gears, wheels, lights, saddles and more.

Minor adjustments and tune-ups are carried out on site, and where bigger repairs are needed, the mechanic provides clear advice on what to expect from a typical bike shop.

Backed by Regional Funding

The events, which usually cost between £750 and £1,350, are being offered at no charge thanks to funding from Network Rail’s Transpennine Route Upgrade and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Beth Lomas, EPIKS Active Travel Manager, said: “Lots of employers locally are keen to help their staff explore ways to travel that enable them to leave their car at home.

“E-bikes are a great option for lots of households – they’re an affordable, healthy, low-carbon way to travel, and many models now fold away, so storage is easier.

“An e-bike rides like a normal bike with the benefit of a motor that assists pedalling and makes climbing hills easy.

“If you can ride a bike, it’s just a little step to get the hang of an e-bike. For many people, taking one for a spin at one of our events was exactly what they needed to find out if e-bikes were a good solution for them.

“We’re only able to offer a limited number of these free events over these last few months of 2025 – our message to employers is – do something ‘wheely’ smart and get in touch today!”
