Plans to transform a historic Huddersfield landmark into a vibrant community hub have received a major boost this week, with the launch of an ambitious crowdfunding campaign to fund the work.

The HUDAWI Consortium has unveiled its vision to breathe new life into the HUDAWI Cultural Centre, situated just outside the ring road.

The project, titled the ‘Hudawi Revival’, aims to combine a sensitive refurbishment of the building’s interior with the creation of a stunning new social memorial garden.

To turn this vision into reality, the Consortium has launched a fundraising appeal on the community platform Spacehive.

Organisers are calling on local residents, businesses, and supporters to back the project, noting that widespread community support could be the key to unlocking vital match funding.

Restoring a Community Cornerstone

The HUDAWI Cultural Centre is set for a community asset transfer away from Kirklees Council to bring it under community ownership.

For decades, the centre has served as a cornerstone for African-Caribbean heritage and social progress in Huddersfield.

However, the facility is now in need of care and renewal to ensure it can continue to serve future generations.

The renovation plans are designed to be both aesthetic and functional. The first phase of work will prioritise the internal decoration of the Main Hall and entrance lobby.

The goal is to create a welcoming first impression that reflects the building’s unique identity, featuring contributions from local artists to celebrate the town’s rich cultural history.

“We aim to bring new life to the HUDAWI Cultural Centre,” the description on the funding page says.

“We are improving the internal aesthetic look and design of the building to honour the inspirational community members from the past and the town’s African-Caribbean heritage.”

The ‘Hudawi Revival’ Campaign

The newly launched campaign is seeking to raise the funds necessary to purchase materials and secure the specialist labour required for the transformation.

The funds raised will directly support:

• Internal Redesign: Complete decoration of community rooms for events, classes, and local organisations.

• Garden Materials: Paving, plants, and furnishings for the new outdoor space.

• Artistic Heritage: The commissioning and installation of works by local artists.

The Consortium, which includes key local groups such as the Black Business Support Agency and the Black Lives Coalition, stresses that every pledge counts.

By demonstrating strong local backing through the crowdfunding page, the project strengthens its bid for additional institutional grants.

A Sanctuary for Reflection

A centrepiece of the revival is the development of an outdoor “social memorial garden.”

Scheduled to begin in the springtime, this landscaping project will transform the grounds into a vibrant, accessible area featuring floral displays and dedicated seating.
