Creative Scene brings ‘Boxville’ to Batley with interactive storytelling, hands-on building, and STEM-inspired adventures for kids

A magical town made entirely of cardboard is set to spring up in Wilton Park, Batley, as part of a free, fun-filled event for families hosted by Creative Scene.

The event, called Boxville, will take place on Saturday 31 May and promises a day of creativity, imagination, and hands-on engineering for children aged 4–8 and their families.

Developed by Cardboard Adventures in partnership with The Friends of Wilton Park, the immersive experience invites children to help build a cardboard town while crafting their way through stories, challenges, and interactive tasks.

Become a Cardboard Engineer

“You’ll be able to craft-a-long with the story and build your own way through the tasks and trials of BOXVILLE, earning everything you need to gain your IMAGIBADGE and become a fully-fledged cardboard engineer,” said Helen Brook, Producer for Creative Scene.

“You’ll also be able to make your own cardboard creation to take home.”

Two drop-in sessions will run during the day — the first at 11.30am, and the second at 2.30pm. There’s no need to book, the event is completely free, and older children are welcome to join in with their parents.

Creativity Meets STEM

As well as encouraging imaginative play, Boxville also introduces children to key STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) concepts through creative building challenges.

“We’re working with Friends of Parks to bring free family activities into the outdoors so that everyone can enjoy getting creative on their doorstep,” said Nancy Barrett, Creative Director for Creative Scene.

“As well as the fun element, children will learn about engineering and STEM subjects. We’re expecting paper dragons, corrugated crabs and cardboard space robots!”

Arts on the Doorstep

Creative Scene is part of the Creative People and Places programme, funded by Arts Council England to bring more arts opportunities to areas where people are typically less involved in cultural activity.

The initiative is focused on Kirklees, working with local residents to create events and experiences that are both accessible and inspiring.
