New 12-week initiative focuses on early intervention, mental health, and community resilience for 8–13-year-olds
A powerful new youth initiative is being launched in Huddersfield’s Ashbrow Ward, thanks to funding from the Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund.
The programme, titled Charge Up & Chill, is a collaboration between Temple Well-Being, AYD Elite Academy, and Yorkshire Community Development and is set to deliver a transformative 12-week journey for local young people.
Early Intervention with a Community Heart
Charge Up & Chill is designed to engage children aged 8–13 in structured, positive activities that support early intervention and help divert young people away from antisocial behaviour.
With a focus on community cohesion, the programme brings together participants from different backgrounds to create a safe, inclusive environment where young people can connect, grow, and thrive.
By offering meaningful alternatives to risk-taking behaviours, the initiative aims to reduce the potential for future delinquency while also fostering a stronger sense of belonging and shared purpose within the local community.
Prioritising Mental Well-Being and Resilience
At the heart of Charge Up & Chill is a commitment to improving both mental health and physical well-being.
Each session provides a safe space where young people can express themselves openly, develop emotional literacy, and learn vital coping strategies to navigate the challenges of growing up.
Importantly, the program also offers specialised emotional support for children who have experienced or witnessed crime.
By working with trusted adult mentors who bring lived experience and empathy, young people gain tools to boost their resilience and build a more positive mindset as they move into adolescence.
“This programme is about more than just keeping kids busy,” said a representative from Temple Well-being.
“It’s about giving them the support, role models, and safe space they need to process their emotions, build friendships, and grow into healthy, confident young people.”
Make a Referral – Change a Life
Do you live with or support a young person aged 8–13 in the Ashbrow Ward who could benefit from this kind of support?
Whether they’re struggling with confidence, seeking positive role models, or simply needing a place to feel heard and included, Charge Up & Chill offers a lifeline.
Spaces are limited, and demand is expected to be high, so early referrals are strongly encouraged.
