It was a powerful day of celebration, pride, and togetherness as the Hudawi Cultural Centre officially launched following its historic Community Asset Transfer.

Located on Great Northern Street in Huddersfield, the building has now been returned to the African-Caribbean community on a 125-year lease after being declared surplus to requirements by Kirklees Council.

The Hudawi Centre, an anagram of Huddersfield African West Indian Centre, carries a deep legacy dating back to the 1990s, when it was rebuilt following the fire at Birkby Civic, a former community hub from the 1970s.

The launch event on Saturday, 20 June, was a vibrant celebration of community ownership, resilience, and hope for future generations. The centre will now serve as a multi-purpose space for cultural events, education, weddings, funerals, conferences, youth programmes, and community initiatives designed to strengthen cohesion across Kirklees.
