Huddersfield’s St Peter’s Garden and its surroundings have undergone significant regeneration, marking a key achievement in the Huddersfield Blueprint.

The project was executed in collaboration with Huddersfield Parish Church, a registered charity.

Major Improvements and New Features

The extensive works included the installation of new natural stone paving, the widening and resurfacing of footpaths, cycle parking facilities, tree planting, and the relocation of historic tombs within the church grounds.

A central feature of the renovation is the new events space, designed to foster a welcoming environment for both day and night activities, providing enjoyment and opportunities for local residents and businesses.

Official Opening and Community Celebration

Barry Sheerman, who served as Huddersfield’s MP for 45 years, officially opened the new events space prior to the completion of the surrounding works.

The inauguration was celebrated with a special Huddersfield Service at the church and a festival-style show featuring the popular local rock band, Storm.

Upcoming Festive Events

The newly refurbished St Peter’s Garden will play host to approximately 40 stalls at the Huddersfield Christmas market, scheduled from 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday, 30 November.

The market will feature local artisan products, festive food and refreshments, and live music from choirs and bands across the district, enhancing the festive atmosphere.

Huddersfield Parish Church is also inviting local organisations to contact them with any requests or suggestions for hosting events throughout the festive season.

Enhancements to Byram Street

In addition to the garden’s refurbishment, improvements to drainage and vehicle and pedestrian access on Byram Street have been completed this month.

These enhancements are expected to complement the new events space and facilitate greater public access, contributing to the festive celebrations.

Council and Church Leaders’ Statements

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, expressed his delight at the project’s completion: “I’m thrilled after months of hard work and partnership working, we have completed part of the Huddersfield Blueprint by delivering improvement works to and surrounding St Peter’s Garden.

“Working alongside Huddersfield Parish Church, the events space was opened several weeks ago with a well-received show.

“I look forward to seeing many more to come, especially over the Christmas period. I’m sure the church will have lots to offer.

“Now we have completed works to Byram Street to improve public access, I really believe more people will want to visit Huddersfield Town Centre and more businesses will want to utilise this fantastic space, putting us on the right track to support the long-term sustainability of Huddersfield.”

Event director Reverend Amanda Ogilvie from Huddersfield Parish Church added: “This brand-new outdoor venue has everything needed to stage some brilliant events, including plenty of power sockets for lights and music amps.

“We want people to use it, so simply contact the church for more information.”

This project has been funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Kirklees Council’s Golden Routes Capital Programme.
