Phase 1 of landmark regeneration project set to open summer 2026

Work is moving full steam ahead on Kirklees Council’s flagship regeneration scheme, Our Cultural Heart, with Phase 1 on track to open in summer 2026.

The ambitious project is set to transform the heart of Huddersfield town centre.

The first phase will see the opening of a modern library hub and a food hall housed within the striking shell of the former Queensgate Market.

Alongside these, a new public square will provide a flexible and welcoming space for outdoor events, markets, and everyday community use.

Blending heritage with the future

Construction partner BAM UK & Ireland is making strong progress on site, with works ranging from the restoration of heritage features to the installation of sustainable technologies.

The aim is to balance old and new, creating something unique for both Huddersfield and the wider Kirklees area.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration, said: “This is an exciting moment for everyone involved in Our Cultural Heart.

“This first phase will set the tone for everything that follows – not just in the rest of the programme, but in how we think about our town centres more broadly.

“We’re creating more than just buildings – we’re creating the foundations of a town centre that’s vibrant, inclusive and built for the future.

“With a brand-new library hub, a buzzing food hall and a welcoming new outdoor space, Phase 1 will give local people and visitors something to be genuinely proud of.”

Next steps for Our Cultural Heart

Earlier this month, the Kirklees Council Cabinet approved the next stages of the project.

Phase 2 will see the transformation of the much-loved former library into a brand-new museum and art gallery, surrounded by new public spaces.

Work is due to begin in spring 2026, with the museum and gallery expected to open in 2029.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet has also given the green light to prepare for the demolition of the remaining Piazza retail units in 2026.

This will clear the way for Phase 3 of the scheme – a brand-new town centre park.
