Four school crossing patrol officers mark over 30 years of keeping children safe

It’s a milestone year for four of Kirklees Council’s longest-serving school crossing patrol officers, better known as ‘Lollipop Ladies’ who together have devoted more than 120 years to helping thousands of children and families cross local roads safely.

Angela Smithson of Shaw Cross Junior and Infant School, Susan Bennet of Netherhall Learning Campus, and Mary Thomas of Christ Church Academy are each celebrating 30 years in the role.

Meanwhile, Heather Day of St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School marks an impressive 31 years of service.

Their decades on duty have spanned nine UK Prime Ministers, 309 British Olympic gold medals, the launch of the first iPhone, and Huddersfield Town’s historic rise to the Premier League.

A Fond Farewell After 30 Years

Mary Thomas (Pictured above), who is set to retire in December, reflected on her time helping generations of families: “Over the last 30 years or so, I have loved seeing the children and helping them cross the road safely. Some of those children are now all grown up, and they bring their own little ones into school, which has been a joy to see.

“Even though I will miss the job, I won’t miss the early mornings, especially at this time of the year!

“As I retire, I’m looking forward to helping my own kids and spending even more precious time with my seven children.”

Praise from Council Leaders

Councillor Tyler Hawkins, Cabinet Member for Highways, paid tribute to the group’s commitment: “The outstanding service and unwavering commitment shown by these remarkable women deserves the highest commendation.

“Through rain, shine, and everything the Great British weather can deliver, their dedication to our communities has been a constant—guiding generations safely across our roads.

“On behalf of Kirklees, I extend heartfelt thanks to all our School Crossing Patrol Officers for their tireless efforts in making our roads safer for everyone.”

Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Elizabeth Smaje, added: “On behalf of generations of school children, I want to extend my gratitude to our School Crossing Patrol Officers, and in particular Angela, Susan, Mary and Heather, who have dedicated their time to youngsters and their families, assuring them of safe passage to and from school, whatever the weather!

“And to Mary, I wish you all the very best in your retirement.”
