The Deighton Carnival is set to celebrate its 23rd anniversary on Saturday, 29th June 2024, at the Deighton Centre in Huddersfield from midday until 7 pm. As the day draws near, anticipation builds for a fun-filled event accompanied by hopeful sunshine.

This FREE, family-oriented fun day promises to be the best yet, offering activities and entertainment for all ages.

The theme for this year’s carnival is “WELCOME TO DEIGHTON – DEIGHTON CARNIVAL 23rd ANNIVERSARY,” celebrating the carnival’s significant milestone and the diversity of the area.

A host of new and exciting projects, activities, and attractions are planned for this year’s event. Notably, Kirklees Libraries, in collaboration with the British Library, will present a special project celebrating 50 years of Black Music Culture and its influence both past and present in Kirklees.

Attendees can look forward to a young people’s music arena and a separate arena for older music enthusiasts, catering to all musical tastes and genres. The carnival procession, known for its vibrancy and colour, will feature many new groups this year. The opening ceremony, including a ribbon-cutting by a special guest, will commence at 1 pm, launching the procession around the Ashbrow Ward and returning to the centre by approximately 2 pm, where field activities will already be underway.

Tuckers Fun Fair will once again be in attendance, featuring exciting new rides suitable for all ages.

Howard Belafonte, the Deighton Carnival Events Coordinator, remarks, “After the overwhelming success of the 2023 Carnival which attracted a turnout of well over 10,000 people during the day, another fun-packed free family day out is planned and promised.”

The stage show lineup promises to be exceptional, featuring confirmed acts such as:

• KAHPUN: An internationally acclaimed reggae artist from Ghana, known for his energetic live performances. He is the first Ghanaian artist to headline any carnival in the UK and has recently returned from sold-out shows in Jamaica.
• FARDA FOX: The original carnival stage show compere, a polished host and recording artist who has toured the UK and abroad with top artists and performers.
• DJ SWAY – SWAYTEL: Bringing his unique style as a compere and performer, Sway will keep the stage show lively and engaging, including a guest performance.
• LIL JAM: Teen singing sensation Jamelia K Sadiq, who began her music career at age eight, has performed with renowned artists like Maxi Priest and Aswad. She is one of the most in-demand teen artists in the UK.
• TRIBAL SHOOTS: Returning by popular demand, this energetic three-piece band has a growing fan base and a promising future in the music industry.
• ISLE IN HARMONY: A favourite of the Deighton Carnival Street procession and a highly popular troupe on the UK carnival circuit. They have won the Best Troupe award at the Deighton Carnival for the last four years and will also perform on the carnival stage.
• PURE ELEGANCE: A vibrant and colourful troupe well-loved by carnival audiences, performing at various UK carnivals.

Other local acts performing on the day include:

• SHANTE: A young female vocalist.
• SIR GRAFFTA: Rap artist and local entrepreneur.
• SERENITY: A female singer with an excellent performance at last year’s carnival.
• EAZZY P: A talented lyricist with great potential.
• REACH PERFORMING ARTS: A popular carnival mas band and street dancers.
• WHITE ROSE GYMNASTIC SCHOOL: Returning role models for young aspiring gymnasts.
• EZE: A young spoken word/rap artist, a phenomenal entertainer.
• PHOENIX MAS BAND: A lively and vibrant Deighton-based carnival troupe.
• DJ HUGHLIN: Nationally renowned No.1 DJ, keeping the stage show dynamic between acts and closing the event with a live set.

The traditional carnival activities will all be present, including the procession, stage show, and various sports activities like a five-a-side football tournament, basketball, netball, and table tennis.
