Landmark analysis of 413,000 cases reveals persistent inequalities and fragmented national data systems hindering progress
A major new UK-wide study has revealed that people living in the most deprived areas face significantly lower survival rates from blood cancer than those in more affluent communities.
The research, analysing more than 413,000 cases between 2009 and 2019, highlights a consistent pattern of inequality across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The findings show that deprivation remains one of the strongest predictors of survival outcomes for patients with blood cancer.
First UK-wide analysis exposes data challenges
The study is the first to examine survival across all major blood cancer subtypes across the four nations, combining data from four separate national cancer registries.
However, researchers say the work also exposes major inconsistencies in how blood cancer data is collected and reported.
Differences in structure, completeness and classification across national systems made it difficult to draw fully consistent conclusions, particularly for rarer cancers.
“Deeply concerning” inequalities persist
Michelle Thornhill, diagnosed with myeloma in 2013, said her own experience highlighted the difference early access to treatment can make.
“As a professional woman of colour who was fortunate enough to access a clinical trial for myeloma quickly, I’ve seen firsthand what timely, advanced care can do.
“But it’s deeply concerning that outcomes for blood cancer still vary so much depending on where you live or your background.
“I find it extremely alarming that there are persistent inequalities in survival of blood cancer, which is directly linked to deprivation, something that simply shouldn’t be the case.
“We need to ensure that everyone, not just those who are educated or affluent, and no matter what your background or income, has the same chance & opportunities to access the best care quickly.”
Progress uneven despite advances
Blood cancer remains the third biggest cancer killer in the UK, affecting more than 40,000 people each year.
While survival rates have improved over the past decade for some types, progress has been uneven.
Patients with harder-to-treat blood cancers continue to face particularly poor outcomes, underscoring the need for continued innovation in treatment.
Researchers emphasise that clinical trials remain one of the most important pathways for patients to access new and more effective therapies.
Experts call for urgent action
Dr Janice Hoang, lead researcher from the University of Leeds, said: “This is the first time we’ve been able to look at survival across all major blood cancer types at a UK-wide level, and it clearly shows that deprivation remains one of the most consistent and important drivers of inequality in outcomes.”
“While survival has improved for some blood cancers over the past decade, this progress is not uniform.
“For many patients, particularly those diagnosed with harder-to-treat diseases, outcomes remain poor, which underlines the need for continued investment in research and clinical trials to develop better treatments.”
Dr Rubina Ahmed, Director of Research, Policy and Services at Blood Cancer UK and co-author of the study, added: “This study confirms what we have long seen – that deprivation remains one of the most persistent drivers of inequality in blood cancer outcomes.
“It also highlights the urgent need for better, more consistent national data on blood cancers. At the moment, fragmented systems across the UK make it difficult to fully understand where inequalities are happening and why.”
Calls for better data and national coordination
The findings have already informed Blood Cancer UK’s UK Blood Cancer Action Plan, which calls for improved national data infrastructure, standardised reporting, and greater visibility of blood cancers within official statistics.
Researchers caution that variations in data quality across the UK mean some results, particularly for rarer subtypes, should be interpreted carefully.
Nevertheless, the study paints a clear picture: where a person lives, and their socioeconomic background continue to play a decisive role in their chances of surviving blood cancer.
