New town centre location offers residents and visitors more opportunities to learn about the Dewsbury Market redevelopment and wider Blueprint projects

The Dewsbury Blueprint information container is set to move to a new home on Longcauseway, opposite Dewsbury Town Hall, giving residents, traders, and visitors easier access to updates on the town’s ambitious regeneration plans.

Previously located outside Dewsbury Market, the container will now sit in the heart of the town centre, where work continues on creating a new and improved public realm.

The container will serve as a central information point for the council’s regeneration programme, providing updates on Dewsbury Market, the temporary market, and the forthcoming Town Park, which will become the largest green space in the town centre and the first dedicated outdoor area for children to play and for the community to come together.

Talk to the Markets Team

Members of the public will have the opportunity to speak directly with Kirklees Council’s Markets team at the container every Wednesday and Saturday between 11 am and 1 pm.

The move aims to make it easier for shoppers and visitors to stop by, ask questions, and learn more about how Dewsbury’s transformation is taking shape.

Cllr Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance and Regeneration at Kirklees Council, said: “We want to keep shoppers and visitors informed about our plans for Dewsbury Market, the temporary market, and the town park.

“The new location of our information container is in a great place for people passing who may not venture to the market already, to get excited and find out more about the plans for the town.

“The container will also give an idea of how the temporary market will look in the future around the town centre.

“The revamping of Dewsbury Market and creation of a brand new town park are two key parts of the Dewsbury Blueprint – the council’s overarching masterplan for investment in the town centre, which aims to create more reasons for people to visit, support local businesses and create a more vibrant, family-friendly town centre.”

Market Redevelopment Plans Move Forward

Planning permission has now been granted for a temporary market to operate from Dewsbury town centre while major redevelopment work takes place on the existing site.

The council has been engaging closely with market traders to understand their individual needs during the transition period and to support those wishing to continue trading during the move.

This follows extensive consultation on the detailed designs for both the permanent market and Town Park.

To minimise disruption for traders and shoppers, and to avoid a decant during the busy pre-Christmas period, the council has confirmed that the market relocation will take place in Spring 2026.

Construction work on the main market site is expected to take between 18 and 24 months, with the temporary market remaining in operation throughout this period.

A Temporary Market

During the redevelopment, the temporary market will open at full capacity two days a week, with additional activity planned up to five days a week, including a second-hand market every Friday.

The council hopes this approach will maintain a lively and attractive town centre while long-term improvements are delivered. However, the local authority has come under scrutiny in recent weeks following opposition to the planned changes to Huddersfield Open Market.
