Traders will relocate to Foundry Street and Market Place while work gets underway on the historic town centre market

Transformation work is set to begin at Dewsbury Market, marking another major step in the regeneration of the town centre.

A temporary market will open on Saturday 26 September, allowing traders to continue running their businesses while work takes place on the existing market.

The main market will remain open until 26 September, giving residents an opportunity to continue shopping with their favourite traders before they move to the temporary site.

The works form part of the Dewsbury Blueprint, Kirklees Council’s long-term plan to regenerate, revitalise and future-proof the town.

Temporary market keeps traders at the heart of Dewsbury

The temporary market will be located across Foundry Street and Market Place, keeping the market in the heart of Dewsbury town centre throughout the construction period.

A pedestrian zone has been created as part of the temporary arrangement, with the layout designed to encourage footfall while minimising disruption to traffic, local businesses, residents and traders.

Many familiar traders will continue operating from the temporary market, including fruit and vegetable stalls, food vendors and household goods businesses.

The temporary market is intended to provide traders with a dedicated space to continue operating, helping to protect livelihoods while the wider regeneration programme progresses.

Plans for a modern and flexible market

The transformation of the main market will focus on creating a modern, future-proofed space with an adaptable layout, event space and a town park.

The vision is to create a vibrant destination for shopping, dining and socialising, while attracting new traders and visitors to Dewsbury.

The market redevelopment is part of a wider programme of investment taking place across the town.

Improvements are underway to the civic spaces surrounding Dewsbury Town Hall, while the regeneration of the historic Dewsbury Arcade has now been completed.

New town centre accommodation is also being created through the transformation of Fieldhouse into Station Apartments.

Together, the projects are intended to create a more vibrant and welcoming town centre, offering greater choice for residents and visitors.

Investment in Dewsbury’s future

Residents are expected to see increased activity and changes across the town centre in the coming months as the different projects progress.

The regeneration programme is designed to support local businesses, create new opportunities and encourage more people to visit and spend time in Dewsbury.
