As the voting registration deadline looms closer, it’s crucial for every voice to be heard and every vote to count. Operation Black Vote (OBV) is actively urging individuals to register to vote and to recognise the strength in their numbers and the impact they can make in shaping the future of our society.

Established in 1996, OBV is a non-partisan and nonprofit organisation dedicated to addressing the democratic deficit faced by people of African descent (PAD) communities. Through voter registration campaigns and community engagement initiatives, OBV aims to tackle racial inequalities in various aspects of life, including education, health, and employment. Their work is rooted in empowering individuals to participate in the democratic process and have their voices heard.

Reflecting on the historical context that led to the inception of OBV, we are reminded of the importance of mobilising the Black community to actively engage in shaping their future. The impact of the Black vote was evident in the lead-up to the 1997 General Election, where Black voters played a significant role in shaping political outcomes and garnering attention from major parties.

OBV’s work encompasses political education, participation, representation, and equality promotion within PAD communities. By raising awareness, facilitating voter registration, advocating for increased political representation, and addressing issues of race equality, OBV strives to empower individuals to actively participate in shaping the political landscape of our country.
