Lindley Park care home hosts romantic celebration for couples who have shared nearly seven decades together

A Huddersfield couple who have celebrated 69 Valentine’s Days together enjoyed a romantic celebration this week, thanks to staff at the newly opened Lindley Park care home.

Eighty-seven-year-old resident Susan Johnson OBE, known fondly as Sue, and her husband Peter have been married for 64 years, after first meeting 69 years ago at Oakfield Tennis Club in Birkby.

To honour their remarkable love story – and those of other residents – carers at Lindley Park pulled out all the stops, hosting a champagne reception, a three-course candlelit lunch and an afternoon tea-time dance.

A restaurant-style celebration

Couples were welcomed into the home and treated to a starter of French onion soup, followed by beef bourguignon slow-cooked in red wine and a rich chocolate mousse.

All dishes were prepared in-house by the Lindley Park chef, creating a restaurant-style experience designed to make residents and their loved ones feel truly special.

Peter, who visits Sue regularly, spoke warmly about their enduring bond.

“Every time I see Sue, it feels like a first date. I’m always welcomed with open arms, and I enjoy her company so much. I’m very lucky to have met her. She’s unique, makes friends everywhere she goes, and lights up any room.

“I’m incredibly proud of her – and she still tells me I’m wonderful too.”

A lifetime of achievements and adventure

Sue, a talented golfer who travelled the world competing, was awarded an OBE in 2015 in recognition of her achievements. Over the decades, she and Peter have shared countless adventures.

Reflecting on the celebration, Sue said, “It was really wonderful what the home arranged for Peter and I and the other couples – we are felt very special.”

Peter added, “Staff at the home went all out for Sue and I and the other residents and we can’t thank them enough.”

Nearly seven decades of marriage

The celebration was equally meaningful for 85-year-old resident Colin Noble, who was joined for lunch by his wife Ann. The couple have also been married for 64 years.

Colin said, “it was lovely having a date with Ann – the home made such an effort.”

When asked the secret to a long-lasting marriage, Ann shared her wisdom: “It’s good to have a common ground and you can both enjoy things you like together, but it’s just as important that you make time for your own friends and interests too.”

Anna Chan, Home Manager at Lindley Park, said the event was designed to celebrate lasting love in later life.

“Seeing couples like Sue, Peter, Colin and Ann celebrating nearly seven decades together is incredibly inspiring, and we’re honoured to play a small part in their story.”
