The RSPCA has announced an exciting recruitment drive, aiming to hire 24 new animal rescue officers across England and Wales, including four positions in Yorkshire.

This initiative is part of the charity’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding animal welfare.

Vital Role of Animal Rescue Officers

Animal rescue officers are crucial frontline workers for the RSPCA. They respond to reports of cruelty, neglect, and injury, addressing complaints, and rescuing injured or trapped animals.

These officers work alongside charity inspectors to make a real difference in the lives of animals.

Currently, there are 179 animal rescue officers across England and Wales, and the new vacancies will increase this number to over 200.

From January to November this year, these officers have responded to 247,265 incidents.

A Day in the Life of an ARO

Steve Bennett, RSPCA Chief Inspectorate Officer, highlighted the importance of these roles, stating: “Our animal rescue officers are a critical part of our amazing frontline teams who respond to reports of cruelty, neglect and injury and work to help prevent and reduce these through sharing advice and education with pet owners and members of the public.”

Bennett added: “There is no typical day in the life of an ARO, but you can expect to work closely with people and animals every day, offering a career that is both varied and rewarding, making a real difference to animals’ lives daily.

“It can be a challenging role, encountering upsetting and stressful situations, so we seek resilient, independent thinkers who can handle difficult situations with empathy, remaining calm, professional, and focused. Despite the challenges, you will work in a supportive team environment.”

Opportunities in Yorkshire

The RSPCA is recruiting for one animal rescue officer in Huddersfield and Brighouse, West Yorkshire, and three officers at various locations across North and East Yorkshire, including York, Harrogate, Ripon, Knaresborough, Hull, and Beverley, as well as Scunthorpe and Grimsby in Lincolnshire.

Successful applicants will attend a four-month training course starting in April 2025, designed to equip them for the role’s challenges.

The training includes swimming 50 metres fully clothed and water rescue training, preparing for physically demanding tasks.

Applicants must be 18 by the course start date and demonstrate a passion for animal welfare, dedication to ending cruelty, and promoting kindness and respect.

Applicants must live within one of the specified postcodes for the location they are applying to and have a full manual driving licence and a level 2 qualification in English at GCSE.

The roles involve working a shift pattern, including some weekends and Bank Holidays.
