On Sunday 1 February 2026, St Peter’s Parish Church, Huddersfield, hosted a moving Service of Thanksgiving in partnership with the Caribbean Hurricane Relief Group, bringing communities together in solidarity with Jamaica and the wider Caribbean following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa.

Led by the Rt Revd Smitha Prasadam, Bishop of Huddersfield, the service centred on the theme “Finding Hope in the Face of Disaster”.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, community leaders across Kirklees have joined forces to form the Caribbean Hurricane Relief Group, a coordinated response dedicated to providing vital aid and long-term support to those affected in Jamaica.

The initiative brings together churches, councillors and community organisations determined to make a meaningful impact during a time of urgent need.

Through prayer, scripture, reflection and powerful music from the Huddersfield Community Gospel Choir and local churches, those gathered gave thanks, lamented loss, and renewed their commitment to compassion and practical support.

The service welcomed civic leaders, community representatives and faith groups, and concluded with a blessing and the Jamaica National Anthem, affirming deep bonds of faith, family and friendship across nations.
