Yorkshire companies Red Ladder and Wrongsemble head out on a nationwide tour

Two of Yorkshire’s most celebrated theatre companies, Red Ladder Theatre Company and Wrongsemble, are teaming up this Christmas to tour a festive double bill, A Proper Merry Christmess and A Town Called Christmas.

The productions will visit venues across the UK, including Stockton Arts Centre, Wakefield Exchange, Gosforth Civic Theatre in Newcastle, the Brighton Dome, and close to home at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, where local audiences can experience both shows back-to-back.

A Festive Partnership Takes Centre Stage

Red Ladder’s artistic director, Cheryl Martin, said: “It’s wonderful for us and Wrongsemble to be able to collaborate like this. With the same cast appearing in both productions, it’s a great way of pooling our resources and bringing entertaining stories to life.

“I’m a big fan of Christmas, and though these are very different shows, they both tap into the festive spirit, and we all need a little bit of that!”

Wrongsemble’s artistic director, Elvi Piper, added: “We can’t wait to take these shows on the road this Christmas and share them with audiences right across the country.

“This partnership is all about immediacy, about bringing stories, laughter, and music directly into communities when people need them most.

“We’ve assembled an incredible team of artists to do this, and we’re excited to share the magic that’s bubbling in the rehearsal room.”

A Proper Merry Christmess: Comedy Comes to Huddersfield

Red Ladder’s brand-new comedy A Proper Merry Christmess, co-written by first-time playwright Seeta Wrightson and Leeds writer Leon Fleming, and directed by Cheryl Martin, will bring grown-up festive fun to the Lawrence Batley Theatre.

The show was created through workshops with BITMO (Belle Isle Tenant Management Organisation) and Leeds-based homelessness charity St George’s Crypt, giving it deep roots in real community stories.

Set on Christmas Eve in “West Yorkshire’s (almost) favourite garden centre”, the play follows squabbling staff who must outshine rival departments to win a seasonal bonus.

The question for Team Grotto: win with festive cheer, or resort to something a little less saintly?

A Town Called Christmas: Family Magic for Local Audiences

Wrongsemble’s enchanting family show A Town Called Christmas, written by Elvi Piper, co-directed with Richard Priestley, and featuring original music by Bay Bryan and Claire O’Connor, will also delight.

The story centres on Clementine, who dreams of a gingerbread village where chocolate coins are currency and laughter hangs like baubles.

With the town’s magic fading, she teams up with a grumpy caretaker and a malfunctioning robot to rekindle the festive spirit.
