Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has approved a visa-free travel policy for all African passport holders, effective January 1, 2025.

This initiative aims to promote Pan-Africanism and improve the region’s economic landscape.

Alignment with AfCFTA Objectives

During his final State of the Nation Address on January 6, President Akufo-Addo emphasised that this decision aligns with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) objectives.

He noted, “We have endeavoured to actualize many of the slogans that have dominated our public discourse since independence.

“This is the logical next step to enhance trade and cooperation among African nations.”

Joining Other Nations in Visa-Free Policies

Ghana joins countries such as Rwanda, the Gambia, Benin, and Seychelles in implementing visa-free policies to facilitate easier travel for African citizens.

The president expects that this initiative will boost tourism and economic growth while fostering better relations among African nations.

Year of Return Initiative

This announcement follows the Year of Return initiative in 2018, which marked the 400th anniversary of the first enslaved Africans brought to America.

The initiative attracted 1.5 million tourists and generated $1.9 billion in revenue, establishing Ghana as a significant destination for individuals of African descent and the African diaspora.

Encouraging Cultural Connections

As Ghana undertakes this step, it seeks to encourage its citizens and the diaspora to connect with the culture and history of the continent.
