The John Godber Company returns to The LBT with a sparkling new satire on high society and behind-the-scenes chaos

Renowned touring theatre group The John Godber Company is heading back to Huddersfield this September with their latest comedy, Black Tie Ball, a sharp, satirical look at the glitzy world of fundraising galas, brought to life with Godber’s trademark wit and energy.

The new play by acclaimed playwright John Godber promises a night of hilarity at The Lawrence Batley Theatre (LBT), where audiences can expect everything from fake tans and dodgy raffles to drunken guest speakers and overworked hotel staff.

Behind the Glamour, a Comedy Unfolds

Set during the supposed highlight of the social calendar, the Black Tie Ball has it all: Bentley arrivals, a jazz band, a magician, and a room full of secrets.

While the surface sparkles, tensions simmer beneath the tuxedos. Jealousy, divorce, ambition and chaos collide in this laugh-out-loud social satire.

Told at breakneck speed through the eyes of the catering staff, the play follows one eventful evening from 7 pm arrivals to midnight carriages, with cold coffee, poor service and fraying tempers all part of the spectacle.

Star Cast and Yorkshire Talent

The production features Godber regular William Ilkley (known for War Horse and Trigger Point), and Dylan Allcock, who recently appeared in The Highwayman.

They’re joined by Yorkshire actors Levi Payne and Jade Farnill.

Jade is part of The Godber Theatre Foundation, an initiative launched by the company in 2020 to support emerging actors from East Yorkshire into professional stage roles.

Each year, members are cast in new touring productions, offering vital experience and exposure.

A Night of Sparkle and Satire

With its signature mix of biting humour and heartfelt moments, Black Tie Ball skewers the sophistication of high-society events, while giving a voice to those working tirelessly behind the scenes.

As the production cheekily puts it, being short-staffed has never been so funny.
